You can catch a plane to Taronga Western Plains Zoo from Sydney to Dubbo or driving will take about 6 hours. The zoo is set in a large, open savannah style so you can drive your car around it or hire a bike or a golf buggy to get around. Allow 2 days to see everything so it's a good idea to stay over night in the zoo at the Zoofari Lodge which comes with behind-the-scenes tours. The best way to see the animals is to go to all the presentations - they are usually fed something so they come up the front. Spend another day in Dubbo to see the Dubbo Gaol, Shoyoen Japanese Gardens - 360° panorama (DevalVR plugin recommended), Traintasia (model railway display), walk the Tracker Riley path next to the Macquarie river and visit the nearby Wellington caves.
